Thesis: Re-Examining The Digital Divide in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel
When dealing with the digital divide, one must first contemplate its magnitude. The divide, on a global scale, is vast: over 90%- of the world's population does not have Internet access (BBC, 2005). However, 50% of the world has access to fixed line communications (such as phones), and 77% have access to radio- based communications (cellular phones, satellite communications etc.). This divide between comprehensive telecommunication coverage and limited access to technology exists on many levels and can be found in different scales: global, national, regional and urban. In addition, the agglomeration of businesses, which create specialised areas of economic activity means that telecommunication and information technologies have a distinct geographical aspect: core and periphery.
My research charts the link between telecommunications, power relations and patterns of usage and consumption of information manifested in Tel Aviv – Jaffa. This triangle of variants integrates three usually quite separate fields of research: power relations as expressed through sociology and political studies, telecommunications researched in electrical engineering departments and consumption, usually an area of communications studies.
